A huge ring thing in Fushun, China, apparently. Kinda looks similar to the Gateway Arch. One of those odd-looking Chinese construction projects or something maybe.

Old River Control Complex

So apparently if this thing goes, the Mississippi River will change course and this would likely cause enormous short-term economic damage and stuff. No more Mississippi River in New Orleans. Wow. Randall Munroe has found some really interesting stuff.

Presidio Modelo

Cool looking abandoned former prison on Juventud Island in Cuba. Apparently it was based on a prison in Illinois where they had a guard in the middle and all the prisoners circularly surrounding the center so the prisoners wouldn't know if they were being observed or something. Weird, possibly controversial, possibly tragic, but today it's a historic site that has an interesting setting.

Paracas National Reserve

beautiful desert coast area of Peru. with apparent biological significance too I suppose. very pretty anyway

Pungo Andongo

Neat bunch of pretty large rocks in northern Angola. There seem to be various rock landscapes in the area. Probably some great views are available in this region.

Alhambra

Famous Moorish (I think) palace in southern Spain. Looks quite pretty in various ways.

Apparently a big meteorite. i think a meteorite is what happens when the meteor lands on earth so now its a meteorite not a meteor. Anyway, something to see in Namibia.

Tatra National Park

Or the Ogrodzieniec Castle. Old pretty ruins of a castle I guess, with some neat rocky features there too.

Edinburgh

Capital city of Scotland which features the epic-looking Arthur's Seat mountain, at least one castle probably, the funky modern lookin' Scottish Parliament, and probably other neat stuff too. It kinda looks like a cool city for exploring or taking pictures or somethin.

Luagan Lalak

pretty lake and "recreational park" in Brunei, with neat boardwalks and peaceful-looking scenery.

Kuching

It's got a funky city hall and a funky Sarawak legislative building. It's also on Borneo so culturally it might look funky too to a funky American like me.

Rynek Glowny

Public square in Krakow, which seems to be considered one of the best public squares in the world. Poland has a lot of cities with really lovely looking squares; I wanted to pick at least one to put on this blog.

Huascaran National Park

Peruvian national park featuring mountains, glaciers, and lakes. It looks quite gorgeous. It includes Alpamayo, a mountain that looks pretty. Got inspired to add this from that Globe Trekker show.

Fort Sumter

Seems like the history books generally seem to give this place some status like where the American Civil War began. It's an island in Charleston's harbor and it seems interesting.

Wilsons Promontory

Looks like the southernmost tip of the Australian mainland. There are some mountains here, and some really pretty views of the blue ocean, scattered islands, and the pretty beach.

This most populous city in Brazil seems to have some cool parks like Trianon Park and Independence Park. And probably other stuff too.

Lakshadweep

These very small islands off of Kerala's western coast are a union territory of India. Interesting. They're like the Maldives but not as popular maybe. Also, I read the Indian government doesn't allow foreign tourists on some of the islands, including the one with the "capital" city/town. Interesting. Kinda makes me want to see what this place is like... and if there's a legal way to visit that capital island. There's a lighthouse on one of the islands that looks cool and which has a beautiful viewpoint from its top.

Shimla

Capital of Himachal Pradesh. A mountainous city with pretty views or itself as well as mountain tree scenery, perhaps snowy too, an interesting-looking church, and other stuff I guess.

Kara Dag

Some Crimean nature place. Pretty topography. Natural arch in the sea. Thanks new Google Maps and Google Search and Discover Ukraine and others.

Dar al-Hajar

A famous old tower in Yemen built on/with rocks. Looks quite pretty and unique. Found something like this, maybe even this very thing, from the new Google Maps.

Popa Taungkalat

Buddhist monastery thing in Myanmar. It's like a golden pagoda castle on a huge mountain pedestal. Looks neat. Found through a Google search including Environmental Graffiti and RatesToGo. Looks like there's also a national park featuring a Mount Popa around here.

Rhine Falls

Rhine Falls/Rheinfall is a waterfall or rapids thing in Switzerland on the Rhine River. Fairly famous in Europe maybe.

Grasslands National Park

Beautiful prairie in southern Saskatchewan, with a large hilly expanse of grassland. Seems like a great place for a no-fence, no-pavement hike. :) Found this on Google Maps- looks lovely. (Found a new trick today where you zoom out as far as possible so you see like the whole world, and then drop Pegman somewhere, and it seems to generally take you to quite a scenic location. Cool!)

Wallowa Lake

Discovered from Google Maps. Beautiful views at this Oregon lake, with the mountains to the south. Reminds me of New Zealand.

The capital of Tatarstan. There's a really pretty looking mosque here, and the city's kremlin thing looks kinda neat too.

Found this from Angola.org. Seems like a volcanic geologic feature: a "crack" or "fissure" or something. It seems to be on the rim of a plateau or something, so the views look quite good from here.

Buzludzha Monument

The communist thing at the top of some mountain in Bulgaria is abandoned and kinda ironic, now that Bulgaria is now a member of the European Union, no longer with such a communist government. This building/monument thing looks kinda flying saucer-ish, and the views from here might be quite lovely.

Durdle Door

The Durdle Door is a natural arch on the southern coast of England. This area looks very pretty.

Aral Sea

The Aral Sea has been shrinking over the years, and interesting remnants seem to remain in this area, such as old abandoned ships and mummified fish. This might be quite an interesting place to explore.

Três Caixas d'Água

These three water towers of Porto Velho, Brazil, are somehow famous, and possibly have the nickname "Tres Marias". Ok.

Kinzua Bridge

The Kinzua Bridge in northern Pennsylvania was probably pretty impressive as a railroad viaduct going over a valley. However, it seems to have been partially destroyed by a perhaps even more impressive tornado in 2003. Now the place looks bizarrely cool, with huge pieces of bridge below and a still neat-looking remnant.

I found out about this place from Google Maps; its label showed up on the map at a pretty far-out zoom level. :P
